What Sets Inconel 625 Wire Apart

Inconel 625 wire is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with niobium addition that delivers high strength without precipitation hardening treatments . The solid-solution effects of molybdenum and niobium on the nickel-chromium matrix provide the mechanical properties that make this wire suitable for demanding applications ranging from cryogenic temperatures up to 982°C (1800°F) .

Unlike sheet or plate products that are typically evaluated by flatness, surface finish, and dimensional consistency, wire products present different challenges. Drawing and rolling processes work-harden the material substantially-cold-drawn Inconel 625 can reach microhardness of 522 HV0.5 with elongation dropping to just 4.37% . This work-hardening behavior is critical to understand because it affects how the wire performs in spring winding, fastening, and welding applications.

The high molybdenum content provides exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, making Inconel 625 wire suitable for seawater applications . The alloy is essentially immune to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking . This is particularly important for wire rope used in mooring cables, submarine components, and undersea communication cable sheathing .

  • Fatigue Strength

Inconel 625 offers good fatigue strength and stress-corrosion cracking resistance to chloride ions. The niobium addition helps prevent creep under applied stress at elevated temperatures . This makes it suitable for flexure devices, bellows, and spring applications where cyclic loading is expected .

  • Non-Magnetic Properties
