2205 duplex stainless steel wire is typically used in applications where 304 or 316 simply won't hold up. Think chloride-containing media, high mechanical loads, or projects with extended design life requirements. Compared to conventional austenitic stainless steel, 2205 offers roughly twice the strength and significantly better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.

What Makes 2205 Wire Different?

High strength. Yield strength is 450MPa minimum, roughly double that of 304 and 316. For the same load-bearing requirement, you can use a smaller wire diameter, which translates to less material consumption and lower finished product weight. Applications like springs, fasteners, and woven wire mesh are a good fit for 2205.
Chloride corrosion resistance. PREN value is around 35, notably higher than 316L. In seawater, coastal atmosphere, chloride-containing process water, and similar environments, 2205 outperforms 316L significantly in pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. When operating temperatures exceed 60℃ with high chloride levels, 316L tends to have issues, while 2205 is a much safer choice.
Stress corrosion cracking resistance. 304 and 316 are prone to stress corrosion cracking when chlorides and tensile stress are both present, which is one of the most common failure modes in industrial settings. 2205 is far less sensitive to this type of attack, which is why many customers switch to it from austenitic grades.
