In actual projects, engineers often start with materials like 304, 316L, or even 904L stainless steel. But once equipment begins showing signs of pitting, crevice corrosion, or stress corrosion cracking, especially in acidic or chloride-rich environments, upgrading the material becomes unavoidable...

Incoloy 825 Sheet: When Standard Stainless Steel Is No Longer Enough

In field applications, engineers usually opt for 304, 316L or 904L stainless steel at the initial stage. Yet in acidic surroundings or areas with high chloride levels, these common steels tend to suffer from pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. Once these issues appear, material replacement is the only practical solution.

In such cases, Incoloy 825 sheet is always a top pick.

UNS N08825 (Alloy 825) is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy. It's widely used in scenarios where corrosion resistance is the key requirement, even if the material costs a bit more. It delivers strong protection against sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, chloride damage and reducing environments.

For most purchasers, the switch to Incoloy 825 sheet is driven by practical costs: constant maintenance and repairs will eventually burn a bigger budget than changing to this high-performance alloy.

Typical Applications of Incoloy 825 Sheet

 Typical applications include:

  • Chemical processing equipment
  • Acid storage tanks
  • Pickling equipment
  • Heat exchangers
  • Marine and offshore equipment
  • Oil & gas systems
  • Pollution control equipment
  • Flue gas desulfurization systems (FGD)
  • Nuclear fuel reprocessing

For many projects, the material is chosen because downtime caused by corrosion costs more than upgrading to a higher alloy grade.

Performance Characteristics

 Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC)

Most standard stainless steels struggle when chloride levels and operating temperatures rise, and they're prone to cracking under these conditions.

Alloy 825 has a high nickel content, ranging from 38% to 46%. Combined with molybdenum and copper additives, it holds up far better in environments with high chloride content.

 Acid Corrosion Resistance

If your equipment runs in mixed acid environments, Incoloy 825 is always a solid option.

Copper enhances its ability to resist sulfuric acid, and molybdenum guards against local corrosion.

We see this alloy used a lot in acid pickling systems, chemical tanks, fertilizer and phosphoric acid production lines. Users mainly choose it for its outstanding stability in these tough working conditions.
